gonçalves vieira _ cruz was founded by José Maria Gonçalves Vieira and Tomás Cruz in 2020. After working with the architects Eduardo Souto de Moura, Manuel Aires Mateus and João Pedro Falcão de Campos, they started the studio with projects in several locations of Portugal such as Lisbon, Porto, Azores, Comporta, Alentejo, Algarve, among others. The studio has also expanded its work internationally, engaging with diverse cultural contexts in countries such as Albania, Austria, France and Switzerland. Their work has been highlighted in several international competitions and awards like the first prize for the National Stadium in Jamor, first prize for Rua do Monte Housing project in Setúbal, second prize for two buildings on the Técnico Alameda Campus in Lisbon, second prize for the Cascais School and shortlisted finalist for Faith Park in Tirana, among other distinctions. Their practice is grounded in cultural inquiry, exploring ancestral gestures expressed through a construction that is both rigorous and fragile.
José Maria Gonçalves Vieira finished his Master Degree in Architecture at Instituto Superior Técnico in 2014 with the exchange programme in École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. In 2014 he wins the National Award of Secil Universidades and is nominated with winning project at EPFL BestOf Architectural Design 2013-2014. He collaborates with Eduardo Souto Moura and Manuel Aires Mateus. In 2020 he founds gonçalves vieira_cruz.
Tomás Cruz finished his Master Degree in Architecture at Instituto Superior Técnico in 2016 with the exchange programme in Technische Universität Graz. He attended the classical guitar course at the National Conservatory of Music. He collaborates with the office Riegler Riewe Architekten and João Pedro Falcão de Campos. In 2020 he founds the practice gonçalves vieira_cruz.
